When medical students were discussing car's problems

Last night I attended the class about problem based learning (PBL). In University of Sydney PBL has been adopted since more than 15 years ago. However, as most of students for master degree in medical education has never taken PBL method when they were studying in school of medicine, it was obvious that PBL was a new experience.

In order to get that experience, our lecturer gave a simulation about how to teach and learn in PBL. In PBL, students are given a fragmented case to be discussed. In my context, last night we were given a case about "broken car" and later on we should find out what the problems are.

Since most of medical students have degree in medicine and have no skills on fixing the car... all they did was following the rules in medicine to meet the diagnosis of the disease.

Firstly, we said we should do "inspection" which is having a look at general conditions or general appearance of the car. Are there any crush, or crust, or stratch and whatsoever...

Secondly, we said we should touch the car to find out any problems.. may be the window is bulging, or the tyres does not have appropriate pressure, etc. In medical terms, we call it as "palpation"

Thirdly, we should do "percusion". We should knock any parts of the car that we are courios as sources of problems.

Finally, we might do "auscultation", we should use additional tool such as "stetoscope" to find out any sounds problem in the car.

We also can conduct some additional examination such as quality of oil and petrolium, spark quality, etc.

Done... so now we can make a diagnosis for the car... what the disease that the car has...

Hmm.... the steps in medicine to define the diagnosis help us to find out what the car's problem. Useful... :)

@Eni: langsung raba? enakkk sih... hahahaha....
Cuma kalo bukan medicine begitu.. jadinya pada tiadk mengerti kan... masalahnya bukan mekanik nih... :)

@Ale: kebalik... menggunakan cara kedokteran untuk menganalisa masalah mobil... :)

@Quintino: None of those... it was just a simulation. :)
